A husband's response when his wife refuses to wear Hijab

Q 3: In some countries, the Muslim woman's Hijab (veil) is not widespread, so if a man married a Muslim woman and she does not agree to wear Hijab, should he divorce her, or what should he do? What about a man that gets married to a woman from the People of the Book who refuses to wear Hijab? What is the ruling on this matter?

A: A woman who refuses to cover her `Awrah (parts of the body that must be covered in public) in the presence of non-Mahram (not a spouse or an unmarriageable relative) men is disobedient to her husband and the Shari`ah (Islamic law) of Allah. Her husband has to advise her of the virtues of wearing Hijab, and if she insists on refusing his commands, (Part No. 17; Page No. 109) he should divorce her, whether she is a Muslim or one from the People of the Book. This is in order to resist evil and protect the family from any source of evil. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
