A Mahram is a condition of travel

361

Q 3: It is well-known that it is impermissible for a woman to perform `Umrah (lesser pilgrimage) or Hajj without a Mahram. Does permissibility relate to the existence of a Mahram during the road leading to Makkah Al-Mukarramah, during the performance of `Umrah or Hajj, or during both of them? Actually, I sometimes, not always, on arriving in Makkah, perform `Umrah alone. Is this permissible? While staying with my family in Makkah Al-Mukarramah, I go alone or accompanied by my mother or another woman to offer Salah (Prayer) at Al-Masjid Al-Haram (the Sacred Mosque in Makkah). However, men do not go with us as they go together to Al-Masjid Al-Haram and women do the same. (Part No. 17; Page No. 336) Sometimes, my mother or sisters may not be present in the place where we live which obliges me to go to Al-Masjid Al-Haram alone so as not to miss the Salah. Is this permissible?

A: It is unobjectionable that a woman goes from her house in Makkah to Al-Masjid Al-Haram alone to perform Salah and `Umrah in case no harm is expected. The case as such is not prohibited as a Mahram is a condition only during travel. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
