A menstruating woman syntactically analyzing the Qur'an

363

Q 2: I heard on the "Nur ‘Ala Al-Darb" program that a menstruating woman is permitted to apply I‘rab (desinential inflection) to the texts of the Qur’an. I teach Muslim women Tajwid (reciting the Qur'an following the rules of recitation). Some of them come to me from distant places and their time is limited. Am I permitted to teach them Tajwid and correct their pronunciation or recite Qur'an to them while having menstruation? Are menstruating women permitted to learn from me or should they wait until they are purified from menses? Please give us a Fatwa on this issue. May Allah reward you. Please note that I personally read the Qur'an from the books of Tafsir (exegesis of the meanings of the Qur’an) that have been divided into sections when I am menstruating, is this permissible or should I refrain to be on the safe side?

A: You are permitted to recite the Qur’an during your menstruation and teach menstruating women proper recitation and Tajwid, but without touching the Mus-haf (copy of the Qur’an). A menstruating woman is permitted to touch the books of Tafsir to see the Ayahs (Qur’anic verses) in them, according to the more correct of the two scholarly opinions.May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
