Q: According to a Hadith regarding
the rights of a father over his son,
the Prophet (peace be upon him) said,
You and your wealth belong to your father.
Does this apply to daughters who work and earn a good salary? Can a father take from her wealth, even though he is not in need and she is under his care?
(Part No. 21; Page No. 181
A:
This Hadith includes both sons and daughters. This is also indicated by another Hadith narrated on the authority of
`Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said,
The best of that which you consume is that which you earn, and your children are part of that which you earn.
Related by the Five Compilers of Hadith (Imams Ahmad, Abu Dawud, Al-Tirmidhi, Al-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah).
However, this is subject to the condition that this does not cause any harm to the child, whether male or female, because the Prophet (peace be upon him) said,
There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.
Other Hadiths were reported to this effect. A father should not take money from his children for the purpose of accumulating wealth, rather he should only take what he needs.May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
