Q: My father died when I was young; and my mother married a man and bore him many children. That man raised me well, until I became a teacher in one of the Masjids (mosques) in
Makkah
under the supervision of a group for memorizing the Qur'an. I still hold that position, and I have a righteous wife. This man loves me more than his own children. I am the elder, and I have never disagreed with him. May Allah (the Exalted and the Omnipotent) safeguard him and elongate his life. (Part No. 17; Page No. 446) My question is
whether it is permissible for my wife to take off Hijab (veil) in front of my stepfather and whether he can look at her,
given that he considers her like his daughter. Should I call him father or uncle? Please note that I have been calling him father since I was young. Please explain the matter to me in detail, so that my heart becomes at ease. May Allah benefit us and you. May Allah (the Exalted and the Omnipotent) safeguard you, elongate your life, keep you righteous, and grant you health and happiness. May Allah reward you best.
A:
It is impermissible for your wife to take off Hijab in front of your stepfather, because he is a non-Mahram (not an unmarriageable relative) to her. There is no problem if you call him father, out of honoring him as he brought you up. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
