Birth control due to the wife's illness and having many children

393

A: It is not permissible for the wife to take birth control pills for fear of having many children or on a plea of want and not being able to provide for the children. This method is incongruous with (Part No. 19; Page No. 318) the objectives of Shari`ah (Islamic law), which encourages procreation. It also involves mistrusting Allah (Exalted be He). However, it is permissible for her to take these pills if another pregnancy proves detrimental to her life, if delivery involves surgery, or for any other necessary reason. In these cases, she is allowed to take the pills unless qualified doctors prove that the pills may have any adverse effects. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
