Delaying completion of a Khatmah to Thursdays and Fridays

614

Q 6: A person constantly reads the Qur'an, by the Help of Allah and to Him is all praise. Most of the time he finishes a Khatmah (one complete reading of the entire Qur'an) every one or two weeks. But if he is going to complete the Khatmah on Tuesday or Wednesday, he stops at Al-Mu`awwidhatayn (Surahs Al-Falaq and Al-Nas) and starts a fresh reading of the Qur'an from Surah Al-Fatihah. Then after Maghrib (Sunset) Prayer on Thursday he resumes his previous unfinished Khatmah from Al-Mu`awwidhatayn in order to have the reward of completing a Khatmah on Friday night. In brief, is it an act of Bid`ah (innovation in religion) to delay the completion of the Khatmah until Thursday or Friday? Should he make Du`a' (supplication) the moment he finishes the Khatmah? Is it better that he makes Du`a' during the day or in the evening? (Part No. 4; Page No. 39) Please inform me of what is best. May Allah grant you a good reward in this life and in the hereafter.

A: The Sunnah (action following the teachings of the Prophet) is to complete the Khatmah to the last Surah (Qur'anic chapter), and not to delay reading Al-Mu`awwidhatayn until Friday or any other day. Rather, one should finish the Khatmah upon reaching Al-Mu`awwidhatayn. Then one can make Du`a' upon completing the reading of the entire Qur'an, starting with praising Allah and invoking Allah's Peace and Blessings upon Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), following the example of the Salaf (righteous predecessors). After this, one may start a fresh Khatmah from Surah Al-Fatihah, and so on.May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
