Q 5:
Did the wives of the Sahabah (Companions, may Allah be pleased with them) wear the Hijab (veil) in the presence of the Messenger of Allah
(peace be upon him) when they asked him about the rulings of Shari`ah (Islamic law)?
A:
Women covering their `Awrah (parts of the body that must be covered in public) and wearing the Hijab in front of non-Mahrams (not a spouse or permanently unmarriageable relatives) is a general ruling, and there is no difference in this regard between the Prophet (peace be upon him) and any other men. The basic ruling is that the female Sahabah (Companions of the Prophet) abided by the Hijab in front of the Prophet (peace be upon him), acting upon the general meaning of the Nas (Islamic texts from the Qur’an or the Sunnah), demonstrating, as always, exemplary commitment to applying the laws of Islam. Anyone who claims otherwise should produce the evidence of exception or violation. (Part No. 17; Page No. 173) May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
