Disposing of bank interest on deposited money

497

Q 2: In one of the banks in my home country I made a deposit on which a fixed monthly interest is taken. I knew from reading the answers to similar questions that interest is regarded as Riba (usury). What should I do with the interest that has been paid by the bank for my deposit? I hope Your Eminence will define the term Riba. May Allah reward you with the best.

A: We hope that Allah (Exalted be He) forgives you for the interest that you took before knowing that it is prohibited. You are obliged to get rid of the other interest that was taken after knowing the ruling on them. You should spend them in charity such as giving money to the poor and Mujahids (persons striving/fighting in the Cause of Allah) and repent to Allah (Exalted be He) for dealing in Riba, as He says, ...whereas Allâh has permitted trading and forbidden Ribâ (usury). So whosoever receives an admonition from his Lord and stops eating Ribâ (usury) shall not be punished for the past; his case is for Allâh (to judge); but whoever returns [to Ribâ (usury)], such are the dwellers of the Fire - they will abide therein. (Part No. 13; Page No. 353)  May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and Companions!
