Q 2: Is it permissible for Muslims to
eat with silver-coated tableware?
Some new Muslim converts fancy keeping these tableware items either because they do not rust in the course of time or because they can not get rid of them.
A:
It is Islamically forbidden to eat with spoons or forks made of or coated with gold or silver. Keeping these tableware because they do not rust in the course of time is not justifiable, as there are other metals that do not rust and are lawful to use. People have even devised methods to protect metals from rusting; therefore, there is no need to keep gold or silver tableware. People who have items of this sort must get rid of them in a way that does not make them forfeit their value.
