Divorce at the request of a mother

194

Q 1: A man married a woman with his parents' consent. After having consummated the marriage, living with her for three years, and having children with her, his mother asked him to divorce his wife without her having done anything wrong, either to her husband or to his mother. The man and his wife both love each other. So what must the man do, should he divorce his wife through fear of being disobedient to his mother or not, bearing in mind (Part No. 20; Page No. 31) his love for his wife and compassion for his children?

A: It is obligatory on the man in question to be dutiful to his mother and be as kind to her in words and deeds as he can. If his wife’s Din (religion) and character please him, he is not obliged to divorce her. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
