Q 5: My mother died after having suffered a great deal in her illness, may Allah be merciful with her. She did not offer Salah (Prayer) for ten days, during this time. She was in a coma for some time, and at the times that she regained her consciousness, she did not offer Salah. This all occurred in a period of ten days. Should I make up for the missed Salahs on her behalf? Or what should I do for her? Is it permissible to grant the reward of Salah to the dead?

A: It is impermissible to make up for missed Salah on behalf of any deceased person, regardless of the reason for abandoning the Salah. It is also impermissible for you to offer Salah with the intention of granting its reward to the dead, for this is not stated in the Shari`ah (Islamic Law). The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Anyone who does an action which is not stated in this matter of ours (Islam) will have it rejected. Related by Muslim in his Sahih (authentic book of Hadith). May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
