Procrastination in repaying debts

Q 16: What is the ruling on procrastination in paying debts?

A: Whoever is able to pay his debt, it is prohibited for him to procrastinate in paying it when its time is due. This is based on the Hadith that was narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Procrastination (delay) in paying debts by a wealthy man is injustice. So, if your debt is transferred from your debtor to a rich debtor, you should agree. Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim. Therefore, if a person is in debt, he should hasten to settle his debts to give people their rights and he should fear Allah (Exalted be He) before death comes while he is still indebted. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
