Q 4:
If I pull the socks down just to make it fit on my feet or to wear another pair, would that invalidate my Wudu' (ablution) or my wiping over the socks?
If I put on the socks then the period of wiping elapses while I am still in a state of Taharah (ritual purification), should I perform Wudu'?
A:
If, after wiping over your socks, you take them off to fix them, and as a result a part of your foot that must be washed in Wudu' is uncovered, even if it is a small area, your Wudu' is invalidated, if they are taken off after you have passed into a state of Hadath (ritual impurity that invalidates ablution). Consequently, the ruling of wiping over the Khuffs (leather socks) becomes invalid, and the socks must be taken off. If the time of Salah is due, you have to perform compete Wudu'. It is not lawful for you to offer Salah with the earlier Wudu' performed before taking the socks off. Likewise, if after wiping over your socks you take them off to exchange them, this cancels the validity of wiping over the new socks, if you put them on based on the Taharah performed by wiping over the first socks. Consequently, your Wudu' is nullified. You have to fully repeat the Wudu' by washing all the body parts that must be washed in Wudu' including the feet. After this, you may wear the new socks and starts a new period of wiping over them. But if you mean wearing another pair of socks over the first pair without taking the first pair off; if you wear the new pair based on the Taharah preformed before wearing the old pair, that is, you have not wiped over the old pair, the ruling of wiping will apply to the outer pair of socks. But if you wear the new pair of socks over the old pair after (Part No. 4; Page No. 105) having wiped over the old pair, the ruling will apply to the first old pair. In this case, before you wipe over them, you have to take the new pair off, then wipe over the inner one. This is because one of
the conditions of wiping over the Khuffs is that the person should wear them while in a state of complete Taharah by washing all the body parts that must be washed in Wudu'.May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
