Following the customs in abandoning Hijab and opposing the husband based on the father's orders

345

Q: I have a righteous wife who fears Allah (Exalted be He) with regard to all matters of religion. Moreover, she finds some troubles with her parents because they ask her to uncover her face in front of her relatives who are non-Mahrams (not a spouse or an unmarriageable relative), as well as to kiss and shake hands with them. Her father asks her to do that. When she abstains from doing that and tells them that this is unlawful in order to convince them in a good manner, they refuse to listen saying that these things are their habits and customs that they cannot do without. They say that their relatives mock them because she wears Hijab (veil). I tried, along with my wife, to advise and guide them to the truth through giving them useful tapes and recording the program of Nur `Ala Al-Darb for them. However, they used to set fire in these tapes and destroy them. Moreover, they took all the tapes my wife had and beat her violently in order to make her go out while uncovering her face in front of her relatives and to kiss and shake hands with them. This is what has happened to my wife (Part No. 17; Page No. 281) in her father's house against her will. At the present time, my wife is in my house after I paid her dowry. Can I prevent her from visiting her family because they compel her to do such unlawful things, or what should I do? I am very confused about this matter. Please guide me to the truth, may Allah reward you well.

A: If the reality is as you mentioned, you will be permitted to prevent your wife from visiting her family because of the evils that result from visiting them such as uncovering her face. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
