Q:
We have a piece of land that we want to sell to improve our living standards. However, this land has not been sold, as no one offers to buy it over a period of five years. Is Zakah (obligatory charity) due on this land?
A:
If you intend to sell the land that you have, it will be regarded as commercial commodity that should be evaluated at the end of every Hawl (one lunar year calculated from the time a property reaches the minimum amount upon which Zakah is due) beginning from the time when the intention of sale was determined. The Zakah should be 2.5% of the value estimated upon the passing of the Hawl on a yearly basis.May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
