Is it permissible for the husband to look at the face of his wife's maternal or paternal aunt? Is it permissible for the husband's paternal uncle to look at the face of his nephew's wife if he is also her uncle? Is it permissible for me to look at the face of the sister of my step-mother? Is it permissible for me to look at the face of the mother of my step-mother? Is it permissible for me to look at the face of the wife of my paternal uncle who is also my father-in-law? Is it permissible to look at the face of the step-mother of my wife?

A: It is not permissible for the husband's father to look at the face of his son's mother-in-law because he is not a Mahram (spouse or permanently unmarriageable relative) for her. Also it is not lawful for the wife's father to look at the face of his daughter's mother-in-law because he is not one of her Mahrams. It is not permissible for the husband to see the paternal or maternal aunt of his wife because it is lawful for him to marry them if he divorces his wife. It is not lawful for the son to look at the face of the sister or the mother of his step-mother because it is lawful for him to marry them. It is not lawful for the person to look at the face of (Part No. 17; Page No. 360) his uncle's wife or his wife's step-mother because he is not a Mahram to them. It is permissible for the husband's uncle to look at the face of his nephew's wife if he is her uncle because he is one of her Mahrams. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
