Khulwah with the sister-in-law

Q 1: Is it permissible to shake hands with my brother's wife? Is it permissible to have Khulwah (being alone with a member of the opposite sex) with her? What is the ruling on doing so?

A: The wife of the brother is marriageable, so it is not permissible to shake hands with her or to be alone with her. It is related by Imam Ahmad and Al-Bukhari on the authority of `Uqbah ibn `Amir that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Beware of going into the houses and meeting women (in seclusion). A person from the Ansar asked: Allah's Messenger, what about Al-Hamu? Whereupon he said: Al-Hamu is like death. Al-Hamu i.e. the husband's brother. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
