Marrying a Mutabarrijah who refuses to cover up

474

Q 2: I married a woman who always displays herself like the women of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic time of ignorance), whether at home, in the markets, or on the days of `Eid (Festival). I ordered her to cover up as mentioned in the Qur'an, but she refused. However, I still love her.

A: You did well when you asked her to cover up and not display her charms to non-Mahrams (not a spouse or unmarriageable relatives). She should not go out of her house except with her husband's permission. When she goes out, she should be modest in her dress and not wearing adorned clothing. We recommend that you be patient and not be hasty in the matter of Talaq (divorce pronounced by a husband). You should continue advising her and guiding her to goodness, may Allah guide her through you. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
