Men and women exchanging letters

346

Q: I am a twenty five year old woman. I wore Hijab (veil) five years ago. I believe in Allah, His messenger, the Day of Judgment and the punishment of the hereafter. I remember death every minute and second. You can not imagine how much I fear death. This is because I sometimes do things that displease Allah. I would like to be a righteous woman and sincere to my Lord. How can I do this? Is it permissible for a woman to exchange messages with a young man in what is called "getting to know each other"?

A: It is not permissible for you to exchange letters or messages with a young man who is not a Mahram (spouse or permanently unmarriageable relative) for you in what is called "getting to know each other". This is because doing so may arouse temptation and lead to (Part No. 17; Page No. 68) evil and corruption. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
