Mentioning the Name of Allah once before slaughtering a herd

355

Q: Is it obligatory to mention the Name of Allah upon slaughtering every single animal in a flock? Or is it permissible to say it once for the entire flock, or should Allah's Name not be mentioned at all?

A: Mentioning Allah's Name is obligatory for every animal slaughtered on its own. Saying it once for the whole flock is not sufficient, for every single animal has its own ruling in terms of slaughtering. Allah (Exalted be He) states, So eat of that (meat) on which Allâh’s Name has been pronounced (while slaughtering the animal), if you are believers in His Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). And the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, If the slaughtering instrument causes the gushing of blood, and Allah’s Name is mentioned (over the slaughtered animal), then (you can) eat (of its meat). May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
