Who was it who named the Surahs (Qur'anic chapters)? Was it the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)?
A:
We do not know of a text that was authentically reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) about the naming of all the Surahs. The names of some Surahs are reported in Sahih (authentic) Hadiths, such as Surahs Al-Baqarah and Al-‘Imran. As for the names of the other Surahs, it seems most likely that they were named by the Sahabah (Companions, may Allah be pleased with them).May Allah grant us success.
