Paying Zakah on an overdue amount owed by the government

355

Q: The government owes me an overdue amount of money but I do not know when I will receive it. Am I obliged to pay Zakah (obligatory charity) on that amount when it is paid to me, or should I wait until my annual time of paying Zakah? Kindly note that I pay the Zakah due on my money on the first day of Ramadan every year. Please advise me. May Allah reward you with the best. A: You are obliged to pay Zakah on the overdue money the government owes you if you are paid and a Hawl (one lunar year calculated from the time a property reaches the minimum amount upon which the Zakah is due) passes while the money is in your possession. If you receive your money and you want to pay its due Zakah in advance during Ramadan with the rest of your money, this is permissible. (Part No. 8; Page No. 126
