Q 3: Is it permissible to recite the Qur’an
without having performed Wudu’ (ablution)?
What is the evidence for this? Is there any controversy on this issue? If there is, what is the soundest scholarly opinion?
A:
A Muslim is allowed to recite the Qur’an while in a state of minor Hadath (ritual impurity that necessitates ablution) without touching the Mus-haf (copy of the Qur’an). There is no controversy among scholars over this matter. (Part No. 4; Page No. 114) This is because nothing has been stated in Shari‘ah (Islamic law) that prevents doing so. Permissibility is the original ruling in this act. But reciting the Qur'an after having performed Wudu’ is better.May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
