Repaying debts before getting married

362

Q 1: A person is in debt, (Part No. 14; Page No. 39) and his financial situation does not allow him to repay creditors at present. He intends to repay these debts when he is able, and it should be noted that his creditors do not live in the same country. If this person obtains the money but wants to use it to marry in order to protect himself against temptation, should he repay the debts first or marry?

A: It is obligatory for that person to repay his debts first and marry after that. However, if the creditors allow him to marry before repaying the debts, it will be permissible for him to marry first. As regards strengthening himself against temptation, he may observe Sawm (Fast) to protect himself from it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) stated: 'O young people! Whoever among you is able to marry, should marry, for marriage would help him lower his gaze and keep his virtuousness and whoever is not able to marry, is recommended to fast, for fasting would diminish his sexual power. (Part No. 14; Page No. 40) May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
