Ruling on eceiving fees for reciting the Qur'an

1175

Q 3: What is the explanation of the Prophetic Hadith: Recite the Qur’an but do not make it a livelihood. Is it permissible to recite the Qur'an for a fee as some Egyptian reciters do?

A: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) commanded that we should recite the Qur’an and ponder its meanings as a kind of Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah) and an act of worship, hoping for reward from Allah and fearing His Punishment. Its doctrine has to be learned, comprehended, and acted upon; its lessons of wisdoms should be listened to and heeded. However, the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade taking a fee in return for reciting the Qur’an or making a living through reciting it.May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
