Seasonal banquets bearing the name of a Waly

A: Banquets held at fixed dates in honor of a Waliy, whether each month or each year, are Bid`ah (innovation in religion) and a way leading to Shirk (associating others with Allah in His Divinity or worship). Thus, it is not permissible to participate in these banquets, attend them or eat there, as this may promote Bid`ah. It may lead an ignorant person to worship those Awliya' apart from Allah, believing that they can bring good. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, Anyone who introduces anything into this matter of ours (Islam) that is not part of it will have it rejected. (Agreed upon its authenticity by Al-Bukhari and Muslim). He (peace be upon him) also said, Anyone who does an action which is not stated in this matter of ours (Islam) will have it rejected. (Related by Muslim in his (Sahih) book of authentic Hadith) (Part No. 2; Page No. 286) May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
