Seeking forgiveness and supplicating

Q 3: Is it correct that we make Ma`ruf (that which is judged as good, beneficial, or fitting by Islamic law and Muslims of sound intellect) for the family of the deceased by offering them money, clothing and other things instead of preparing the food which is referred to in the Hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him) where he said: Prepare food for the family of Ja'far. Or not?

A: Providing the family of the deceased with money and clothing can not replace preparing food for them. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said at the end of the Hadith: for they are too busy. The explicit meaning of this report is that the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered that food be prepared for the family of the deceased as the death of a loved one makes them too busy to prepare it for themselves. However, giving money and clothing to needy people in the family of the deceased is a good act and is generally encouraged by Shari`ah (Islamic law) when the family of the deceased and others are in need of it. (Part No. 9; Page No. 95) Accordingly, whoever does so with the intention of relieving someone's distress makes it a good deed.May Allah grant us success. May Peace and blessings of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and Companions!
