If the reality is as you mentioned, you have acted correctly by making Ghusl, and starting to perform Salah and observing Sawm after the expiry of the period of your usual menstruation.
This is because the bleeding that exceeds the usual number of the days of menstruation is not considered menstruation. Rather, it is a hemorrhage. And Allah knows best.May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
