Taharah as a prerequisite for visiting graves

419

Q 2: What is the ruling on a person who visits Al-Masjid Al-Nabawy (the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah) in a state of Wudu’ (ablution) and visits Al-Baqi‘ and the rest of the sites without Wudu’. Is there any blame on him for this?

A: There is no blame placed on him. Visiting Al-Baqi‘ or the Martyrs of Uhud does not require that the visitor performs Wudu‘. It is Mustahab (desirable) to visit graves, but Taharah (ritual purification) is not a condition. This is due to the general meaning of the Hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him): Visit the graves, for they remind you of the hereafter. (Related by Muslim in his Sahih) May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
