Q: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
"It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Day of Resurrection to travel for a distance of one day and one night except with a Mahram (spouse or permanently unmarriageable relative)."
Some claim that as people nowadays use cars it is permissible for a woman to travel from
Riyadh, for example,
to
Al-Kharj
or to any other distance covered by a car in less than a day and a night, although it may take more for camels to cover it, as cars are now the standard means of transportation. Please advise and convince them of this Hadith.
A:
Some of the Sahih (authentic) Hadith that were mentioned on this topic were restricted to three days; others were restricted to a day and a night; others (Part No. 17; Page No. 338) were restricted to another period of time; and others were not restricted at all. The most authentic opinion is that there is no definite concept for restriction; the prohibition is for traveling without a Mahram in general, whether for a long or short distance, and whether this is on foot, by car, by plane, or by camels. Thus,
it is impermissible for a woman to travel without a Mahram for any distance. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
