Q: My father died when I was under aged and my siblings were young.
My paternal uncle thus married my mother and started to look after us. My concerned uncle and my mother then had children. Afterwards, we became of legal age and got married while our paternal uncle got old and most of his hair turned grey. To come to the point, is it permissible (Part No. 17; Page No. 425) for our wives to take off their Hijab (veil) in the presence of my paternal uncle?
It may be noteworthy that we all live in one house along with my paternal uncle's children.
A:
It is impermissible for your wife and the wives of your brothers to take off their Hijab in the presence of your paternal uncle (stepfather) for he is a non-Mahram (not a spouse or an unmarriageable relative) to them. On the other hand, it is permissible for your daughters and female nephews to do so in front of him because he is a Mahram (unmarriageable relative) to them. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
