The maximum period for postpartum bleeding

Q 2: What is the maximum period for postpartum?

A: The maximum postpartum period is forty days, based on the Hadith of Umm Salamah: "During time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), a woman in her postpartum period used to wait for forty days." (Related by Al-Tirmidhi and others) However, if she sees the sign of Tuhr (purity from postpartum period signaled by white discharge or complete cessation of bleeding) before then, she must take Ghusl (full ritual bath), offer Salah, fast Ramadan, and becomes lawful to her husband. If bleeding reoccurs during the forty days, it is considered postpartum blood until she discerns the sign of Tuhr or completes forty days.
