Q 2: What is the ruling on
selling tobacco products
and the like? Is it permissible to give Sadaqah (voluntary charity), perform Hajj and other acts of righteousness from these revenues and profits?
A:
It is not permissible to deal in tobacco or any other unlawful substance, because they are evil and filthy in addition to the physical, spiritual, and financial harm they cause. If a person wants to give Sadaqah, perform Hajj, or do some acts of righteousness, then he should strive to make his earnings Halal. This is based on the general meaning of the Saying of Allah (Exalted be He):
O you who believe! Spend of the good things which you have (legally) earned, and of that which We have produced from the earth for you, and do not aim at that which is bad to spend from it, (though) you would not accept it save if you close your eyes and tolerate therein. And know that Allâh is Rich (Free of all needs), and Worthy of all praise.
(Part No. 13; Page No. 56) The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
Allah is Pure and He only accepts what is pure.
May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
