Q 1:
A man married a woman and divorced her after they had daughters. Then she married again and bore her second husband daughters as well. Should the daughters of the second husband wear Hijab (veil) in front of their mother's ex-husband?
Is it permissible for the ex-husband to marry one of those daughters?
A:
The man who consummated marriage with a woman is prohibited from marrying any of her daughters or granddaughters, whether they are from an ex-husband or a current one. Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) says:
Forbidden to you (for marriage) are: your mothers
until His Saying:
...your step daughters under your guardianship, born of your wives to whom you have gone in
The stepfather is regarded as a Mahram (unmarriageable relative) to the daughters of the wife with whom he consummated marriage. (Part No. 17; Page No. 367) Accordingly, the daughters do not have to wear Hijab in his presence. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
