Q 1: What is the amount of Zakah (obligatory charity) on a farmland that is irrigated by machines? (Part No. 9; Page No. 221) Q 2: Should Zakah be paid upon this farmland after calculating the expenses or before it?

A: Zakah upon grains and fruits should be paid if they attain the Nisab (the minimum amount on which Zakah is due) regardless of the expenses spent on them. When he ordered the employees responsible for collecting Zakah to calculate Zakah upon people's fruits, the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not ask them about the expenses spent on them. The amount of Zakah to be paid on the crops of the farms irrigated with machines is 2.5 % and on the farms irrigated with rainwater and river water where no tools are used is 10 %.
