Should Qunut be said in the Fajr or Witr?

488

Q 1: Which is better, making Qunut (supplication recited while standing after bowing in the last unit of Prayer) in the Fajr (Dawn) Prayer or in the Witr (Prayer with an odd number of units)? Should the recitation in the Witr prayer be loud or sub-vocal?

A: It is desirable for Qunut to be made in the Witr. As for Qunut in the Fajr Prayer, it is made only in the time of hardships and afflictions. This is because it was authentically reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) never made it in the Fajr Prayer except when there was hardship or an affliction. It is worth mentioning that this is the opinion adopted by the Jumhur (dominant majority of scholars), which is the right opinion. If a person performs the Witr alone, the supplication should be made sub-vocally. If a person is the Imam of the congregation, the supplication should be made out loud by the Imam so that the people being led in the Prayers can say, "Ameen," after him.May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
