Suppressing the urge to break wind during Salah

Q: What is the ruling on a person who wants to break wind while offering Salah (Prayer) yet keeps holding it till Salah is over?

A: It is authentically reported in the Hadith on the authority of `Abdullah ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: A complaint was made to the Prophet (peace be upon him) about when man thinks to have let out something during Salah. He (peace be upon him) said, “He should not leave (prayer) unless he hears a sound or detects a smell (of passing wind).” (Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim) Therefore, if the person has not experienced any of these signs, his Salah is valid. But he should not enter Salah while suppressing passing wind according to the Hadith reported by `Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “No prayer can be (rightly performed) when the food is present (before the worshipper) or when suppressing an urge to urinate/defecate.” (Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim) This also applies to passing wind if the person is holding it.May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
