The ruling on Witr

521

Q 1: If I perform `Isha' (Night) Prayer then Witr (a Prayer with an odd number of units) and then I wake up late at night (Part No. 7; Page No. 179) and offer two Rak`ahs (units of Prayer), should I offer Witr again?

A: It is akin to the Prophet's Sunnah that those who offer Witr at the beginning of night and then wake up late at night may offer Shaf` (two units of Prayer) without Witr. It is authentically related by Muslim that the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed two Rak`ahs after Witr. Also, Imam Ahmad and Ahl-ul-Sunan (authors of Hadith compilations classified by jurisprudential themes), except for Ibn Majah, related on the authority of Talq ibn `Aly that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Do not perform two Witrs in one night." May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
